Privacy Policy
Last reviewed on 2026-04-28
This Privacy Policy describes how AcceptEncoding.com ("the Site") handles information about visitors. The Site is a content publication about HTTP compression. It does not require you to register, sign in, or submit personal information in order to read any of the guides.
1. Information collected automatically
When you visit the Site, the web server and the analytics and advertising providers listed below receive standard request data sent by your browser. This typically includes:
- IP address (often truncated by analytics providers).
- The page URL you requested and the referring page, if any.
- Your browser's user-agent string, language preference, and the
Accept-Encodingheader itself. - Approximate location derived from IP (country / region level).
- Date and time of the request, and basic device characteristics such as screen size.
This information is used to operate the Site, measure aggregate readership, debug delivery issues, and serve relevant advertising as described below.
2. Information you submit
If you email the address listed on the Contact page, your message and your email address are received and stored in the inbox used to reply to you. No other personal data is collected through the Site — there are no contact forms, account systems, or comment systems.
3. Cookies and similar technologies
The Site uses cookies and equivalent storage (such as localStorage) for analytics and advertising. A full breakdown by category is on the Cookie Policy page. In summary:
- Strictly necessary: none beyond what your browser uses for normal page delivery.
- Analytics: Google Analytics 4 sets identifiers used to count unique visitors and measure page activity in aggregate.
- Advertising: Google AdSense and its measurement partners set cookies and read identifiers used to deliver and measure ads, including, where applicable, personalised ads.
4. Analytics — Google Analytics 4
The Site uses Google Analytics 4 (measurement ID G-TYSZ8XJX6T). Analytics cookies and identifiers help us understand which guides are read, which search queries lead to the Site, and which pages have technical problems (for example, a high exit rate from a broken example). Data is processed by Google on the Site's behalf. Google's own privacy practices for this product are described at policies.google.com/privacy.
5. Advertising — Google AdSense and partners
The Site participates in the Google AdSense programme. As a third-party vendor, Google uses cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this Site or other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this and other sites on the Internet.
You can opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings. You can also opt out of a third-party vendor's use of cookies for personalised advertising by visiting aboutads.info and youronlinechoices.com.
For details about how Google handles data when you use partner sites or apps, see policies.google.com/technologies/partner-sites.
6. Third-party services
Beyond Google Analytics and Google AdSense, the Site relies on the following third parties whose servers may receive request data simply because your browser fetches resources from them:
- The Site's hosting provider — receives standard request logs.
- Bing Webmaster Tools — verification only; no client-side script.
7. Legal bases (GDPR)
For visitors in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, and Switzerland, the legal bases for processing under the GDPR are:
- Consent — for analytics cookies and personalised advertising cookies, where consent is required.
- Legitimate interests — for basic security, log retention, and fraud prevention on the underlying hosting infrastructure.
- Contract / pre-contract — when you email the Site and we reply to you.
8. Your rights
Subject to your local law, you may have the right to:
- Access the personal data held about you.
- Request correction or deletion of that data.
- Object to or restrict certain processing.
- Withdraw consent for cookies at any time, by clearing site data in your browser or using the opt-out links listed above.
- Lodge a complaint with your supervisory authority.
California residents have additional rights under the CCPA/CPRA, including the right to know what personal information is collected, the right to request deletion, and the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. The Site does not sell personal information for monetary value; however, the use of advertising cookies may constitute "sharing" under California law. You can opt out of personalised advertising as described in section 5.
9. Data retention
Server access logs are retained for a short operational window, typically up to 30 days, and then deleted or aggregated. Analytics data retention is governed by the Google Analytics configuration; the default is 14 months for event-level data. Email correspondence is retained for as long as is reasonably necessary to handle the conversation and any follow-up.
10. International transfers
The Site's analytics and advertising providers operate globally, which means data may be processed in countries outside your own. Where required, those providers rely on standard contractual clauses or equivalent safeguards approved under applicable law.
11. Children
The Site is a technical reference for developers and is not directed at children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction). No content is knowingly collected from children.
12. Changes to this Policy
This Policy may be updated to reflect changes in services, applicable law, or industry practice. The "Last reviewed on" date at the top of the page indicates when the most recent version was published.
13. Contact
Privacy questions can be sent to [email protected]. Please put "Privacy" in the subject line so the message is routed correctly. The governing jurisdiction for this Policy is [Jurisdiction].
